Things You Can Expect in Physical Therapy After Knee Surgery

Knee surgery, more commonly knee replacement surgery, is a common procedure that many elderly people have to go through. It may be necessary when a person suffers from severe damage to the knee joint due to arthritis, other bone diseases or a fracture that has not responded to other treatments. Such conditions may lead to chronic pain and immobility, requiring replacement of the joint. While the procedure is common, recovering from it requires some time.

Post-surgery care and physical therapy are a very important part of recovery when it comes to knee surgery. Even after the patient has been discharged from the hospital, they usually need home care and have to undergo physical therapy for a while. Physical therapy helps them restore the normal movement of the knee joint, ease any pain, swelling, or stiffness, and build strength in the leg. This is extremely essential, particularly for older people, to get back to leading a normal life post-surgery.

There are several senior home health care services that can help you with physical therapy at home. But before you pick any of the elder care services, it is good to know what to expect from physical therapy.

Physical therapy immediately after surgery

In many cases, physical therapy is started immediately after a knee surgery. If the patient is not in too much pain or there are no other complications, they may be put on physical therapy the very next day. This is usually done by in-house physical therapists at the hospital. They will start with making the patient sit on the edge of the bed and suggest slight movements in the leg that can help strengthen the muscles.

Exercises like tensing and relaxing the thigh muscles or moving the ankles are some exercises they may recommend. This has to be under the complete supervision of the physical therapist and never be done alone as the leg is still very weak at this stage. The physical therapist will also try to bring back the most basic range of motion to your knee. They will teach you how to get in and out of bed with support, how to walk with crutches or a walker, how to get in and out of a car, etc.

Physical therapy in home care

After staying in the hospital for about 3 nights, depending on the recovery, most patients are discharged. From this point onwards, home care and physical therapy at home need to start. As the patient is not under hospital care anymore, you may need to contact a good senior home health care service looking for a physical therapist.

After about 5 days of surgery, a patient should be in a position to slowly ramp up the intensity of their exercises. Looking at the progress, the at-home physical therapist will recommend more exercises such as climbing stairs with support, longer walks with crutches or a walker, etc. they may also teach some range of motion exercises to increase the movement in the knee.

The physical therapist can also include some balance training exercises that help the patient respond to changes in the environment. For example, when you’re walking on uneven ground or a rocky surface, you need balance and a quick reflex. To help them with balance and agility, the physical therapist may add activities where the patient needs to turn or change direction frequently, make quick stops, etc.

With time, the therapist will go on adding more activities, until the patient is ready to get back to the life they were living before the knee problem started to limit their movement.

What to expect from different stages of physical therapy

By the time the patient is discharged from the hospital, they should ideally be able to bend their knee, and dress/ bathe on their own. They should also be able to walk at least 25 feet with support and not depend much on a supporting device.

By the 3rd week after surgery, they can likely stand for more than 10 minutes and bend their knee by 90 degrees. At this stage, they also usually stop depending on assistive devices and can walk with the help of a single cane at most.

After week 6, the patient can slowly get back to their everyday activities. They can travel, walk farther without any support and some can even get back to driving.

By week 12, they are on their road to complete recovery. They must continue with the exercises suggested by the physical therapist and stay in contact with them for any needs.

How elder care services can help

Elder care services have professional caregivers and physical therapists who can help elderly patients recover faster from their knee surgery. Senior patients need much more care and professional help to recover from the effects of a surgery of this scale. The skilled professionals at a good senior home health care service know how to deal with aging patients with utmost care and compassion. They can be of great help to your elderly loved ones.

Finding the Best Nursing Home

Home care services provide seniors the proper care and kindness that every senior deserves to be treated in the comfort of their own home. Whether it’s for yourself or for your loved ones, finding the best nursing home that fits perfectly is easy with proper research.

In order to find the nursing home that fits your needs and checks off everything on your list, make sure to stay tuned for important information on what to look for when searching for the perfect nursing home. These tips will guide you on your quest of finding the best services that will be most beneficial in the long run.

Types of Nursing Homes

It can be frustrating to figure out what type of nursing home would suit someone the best. That’s why it’s a crucial part of finding a nursing home process to realize if home care services are the right fit for you or if in-stay living at a nursing home is the right choice.

Being able to have home health care services brought to you in your own home, might make it more comfortable for the senior. Rather than having yourself or your loved one in a nursing home away from everyone, they are able to be home and have the appropriate care brought to them whenever needed.

If that doesn’t sound appealing, there’s always the traditional type of nursing home where it’s an in-stay nursing home at a designated location. If this is the case, make sure when searching that you find one takes care of their patients and make sure to visit before making a final decision.

Check on Location

When finding a nursing home, make sure that you pick one that’s not only in a safe location but also close to family and friends. This way, the senior feels more comfortable and at ease knowing they aren’t far away from their loved ones.

When the nursing home is located close to family, they are able to come to visit whenever due to the close proximity. This will help either yourself or someone else that’s a senior know they are still close enough to have that socialization with the ones they adore most.

Nursing homes that provide home care services are perfect for those who feel safer at their own houses. It’s convenient when the providers come to you and include all services without you having to leave your house and having to stay in a facility that could be not as content for the senior as it would be at their own home.

Properly Visit the Facilities

Make a visitation appointment to properly inspect the facility, this will help give you a better sense of choosing the perfect nursing home. Take note of how the environment is, whether it’s a chaotic or a more peaceful and calming environment.

When visiting, make sure to keep in mind that the way the providers are treating their patients says it all. If the patients seem to be happy and the interactions between providers and patients are pleasant then it’ll help the decision-making process go easier.

Take in consideration the health care services provided for either at home care or in-stay facility care during the visitation.

Ask Questions

If there’s anything you’re concerned about when it comes to a particular nursing home facility, don’t be afraid to ask questions, no matter what they are. The more questions you have, the better it’ll be to have all of the answers before coming to a conclusion.

Asking questions provides a better understanding of making the right choice. Asking things such as what activities are included, what meals are included, what services are available to patients, and anything else relevant to making the patient feel as safe and content as possible is vitally important.

Chat with Healthcare Providers

Still, feeling stuck and stressed out on finding the perfect fit? Well, not to worry, check with local healthcare providers to give an insight into what nursing homes they believe provide the most accurate and ethical care for the patients.

Being able to interact with a professional healthcare provider will give you a nudge in the right direction for picking a nursing home that’s most suitable and exceeds your expectations. They can enlighten you with fact-finding information that will help your search.

Visit again

If you seem interested in a certain nursing home but aren’t sure if it’ll be what fits you or your loved ones, visit again on another day. Visiting unexpectedly can show how providers truly act with patients and if services such as home health care services are being provided accurately, in the facility, and at home as well by asking around.

Another reason why visiting twice at a nursing home you’re interested in is a good idea mainly due to the fact that it gives you a better chance at really getting to know the facility and everything that comes with it.

Get Opinions from Other Sources

Don’t focus on just an opinion from only one source to gain information, try to branch out and ask other sources such as friends, family, and even neighbors on their opinion regarding nursing homes. To get the best results, get feedback from a variety of sources to help the decision.

An important source to discuss the right nursing home is sitting down with family members, considering how their opinions matter to you. So, try to weave out the ones that aren’t even on the list of thinking about being a part of it. Then, it’ll be better to focus on the ones that stood out the most to you and your family.

Finding the best nursing home for any senior can be done with proper intensive research and consulting with many sources to figure out what suits you or your loved ones best. Staying positive and adamant about what nursing home has the best providers and services will have you picking the perfect fit soon enough.

10 Ways to Keep Seniors Happy in Nursing Homes

As we grow older in age, our lives begin to change in many ways. When it comes to living a happy and carefree existence, senior care services can make that transition happen by instituting a succession of activities that stimulate the mind, body, and health for seniors.

There are plenty of benefits of human interaction and seniors deserve to socialize to maintain relationships that ultimately can boost your immune system.

When it comes to having individuality and claiming that independence we all strive for, seniors should be able to live comfortably in their own homes with kind-hearted professionals. There’s no better way to do that than with home care assistance.

Here’s a list of 10 ways to help keep seniors happy and fulfilled with social interaction in nursing homes.

Incorporate family time

Whether it be sitting down with a senior and reminiscing about their favorite memories with family or simply creating a zoom call for them to interact with their family, this is one of the best ways to keep them maintaining those relationships. It’ll make their day, seeing either their daughters’ or sons' faces and catching up with them.

Amada Senior Care states that- “There is a strong correlation between health and the strength of one’s family relationships. The benefits associated with elders who report having stronger ties with their families. Elders who are more socially involved with family members are more likely to live longer than those who remain isolated. This is even true for those who are experiencing late stages of dementia. Although you may not be able to tell, a family’s presence is prolonging their life as well as improving the quality of their remaining years.”

Go for a stroll

Nothing brightens the day more than a breath of fresh air. Planning specific times to take a walk will help lighten the mood and keep them feeling happy and refreshed. A huge benefit of picking home care assistance for your loved one is that activities such as this one builds a stronger bond between the caretaker and senior. Personal activities such as basking in the sun and creating conversations will make memories that will last a lifetime.

The Caregiver Space states- “Walking may be the best form of physical exercise for seniors. Packed with health benefits, walking has all of the hallmarks of senior-friendly physical exercise: it can be performed at low or moderate intensity, it’s easy on joints, it has a low risk of injury, and it’s easy to get started with. Walking Improves Cardiovascular Health. The biggest health benefits of walking for seniors are in terms of cardiovascular health. Countless studies have linked regular walking with heart-health benefits.”

Craft time

What’s more therapeutic than creating crafts and spending quality time with someone you trust and care for? The answer is nothing at all. This is a great mental activity due to the fact that it forces you to stay focused and reach the finish line of the craft. Providing a number of crafts such as painting, knitting, and making jewelry will guarantee a smile on both faces.

Make a meal together

Now, one thing that can bring instantaneous happiness to almost anyone would be food. Making a meal together is another activity within senior care services that would be the highlight of their day. Instead of the caretaker being the only one making the meal, including your senior will make them feel wanted. It can be a fun time to make a creation you’ve both been wanting to try or simply make a favorite meal that will not disappoint.

Read a favorite book

Spend some quality time with each other by bonding over an insanely intriguing book. This activity gives the senior something to look forward to. Planning a specific time to read their favorite book gets them excited about what’s to come. Not only is this something fun to do, but it can also help improve a senior’s life.

Home Instead Senior Care states that- “Seniors who read often enjoy much more than just a good story. Scientific studies have found many benefits of reading for older adults, from reducing stress and enhancing sleep to improving memory circuits, sharpening decision-making, and possibly even delaying the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Invest in storytelling

No matter the age, storytelling is such a fascinating way to learn more about someone. Take an hour out of the day or more, it depends on you, to share stories that have happened in your lifetime. Older adults enjoy sharing their past endeavors and all of the mischiefs they’ve gotten into over the years. Another great bonding exercise to incorporate in the home care assistance.

Movie time

This one's self-explanatory but movie time can be a way to make an activity more personalized. Sharing screen time with each other and laughing builds that emotional connection that’s important to have. If you add some delicious popcorn to the mix then it’s as if you’re at your own home theater.

Have a picnic

Another great way to get some vitamin D is to have a picnic outside, including favorite snacks, drinks, and meals. Who doesn’t love the combination of food and sunshine? So, make sure to incorporate this activity at least once or twice to catch that bright smile that will come across the seniors' faces. Especially, if it’s a beautiful day out, then a picnic would be a perfect way to get out of the house for a few hours.

Take a small road trip

A fun way to keep the excitement going and keep the seniors happy is to take a small road trip. Depending on the location, if you’re close to the beach then a trip to the beach would suffice. The sounds of the ocean crashing onto the shore and the entire view is aesthetically pleasing for both of you to enjoy. If the beach is too far, a trip to a park with a beautiful view would be a perfect alternative.

Pull out the board games

Board games, the best route to take in order to have a friendly competition and keep the mind running. Playing classic games such as Monopoly, Scrabble, UNO, and many others make you think about what your next move is to wipe out the opponent. It’s a fun way for seniors to compete and spend hours feeling content.

When it comes to the 10 ways to keep seniors happy in nursing homes, there’s only one main goal of achieving happiness within them as being their caretaker and that is to just have fun. Having fun with seniors by constantly including new activities that stimulate the body, heart, and soul can leave them feeling fulfilled.

Senior care services can be stressful, due to not knowing what to look for. But, just remember, to make sure seniors are cared for and living a lifestyle you’d hope to live in years to come, incorporate as many exciting activities as possible to keep them exhilarated for what’s to come.

The Benefits Of Companion Care For Seniors

What is Companion Care?

As individuals begin to age, finding companionship often becomes increasingly difficult. This may be caused by the loss of ability to drive therefore limiting mobility, relocation to be closer to family drawing them away from prior acquaintances as well as an increase in friends that are now deceased. Companion care is a supplementary service that offers emotional support and fellowship to these individuals. This is a non-medical service that focuses on social interaction and mental stimulation as opposed to health care assistance.

Services Offered

Those who participate in companion care experience aid in the following categories.

  • Meal Preparation
  • Light housekeeping including helping with laundry and washing dishes.
  • Transportation to doctor’s appointments or other activities located outside of the home.
  • Maintaining communication with loved ones and medical professionals
  • Coordinating activities and social stimulation
  • Administer medication and/or remind companions of necessary self-care routines.
  • Organizing mail and other important paperwork.

Benefits Overview

A companion can allow an elderly person to comfortably live in their home as they begin to need more assistance pertaining to their daily routine. Loss of independence can often be frustrating for geriatric individuals as well as family members. Home care companies take some of the stress off of the family while instilling confidence in their companion. It allows seniors to live their best life while maintaining a feeling of control.

It is said that seniors who maintain a strong bond with another individual are able to maintain a sharp mind later into their life. From emotional benefits to physical benefits, In-home care is an extraordinary way to preserve the well being of your elderly loved ones.

Slow Aging

The New York Times wrote an article on the essential steps an individual must take in order to keep their mind young. Among their recommendations, they spoke on how taking part in a diverse array of activities helps maintain a joyful mindset and a strong sense of wellbeing. As we age, it gets harder to engage in activities on our own. Sometimes it is difficult to hold a thought long enough to pursue an interest. Extended sedentary periods can also start to decrease inner creativity, making it harder for an individual to find activities they enjoy. Companion care helps keep seniors motivated and engaged.

Prevent Depression

Although older people have reported overall satisfaction with their lives, drastic changes that come about with aging, such as the death of a loved one, retirement or illness, can trigger stress and uneasiness. These negative feelings can lead to depression if they are not handled properly.

Depressive states in the older population do not look the same as they do in younger people. Irritability, tiredness and trouble sleeping are common symptoms. When an individual has a hard time getting out and socializing, solitude can make feelings of depression worsen. Making sure your loved ones are getting the attention they need is a great way to ensure their happiness.

Continue Living at Home

When the geriatric population is not able to get the level of care they need at home, they often must relocate to an assisted living establishment or a nursing home. Many individuals often associate this move with a sense of abandonment. They are upset that there is no one to care for them and as a result, they must relocate out of their comfort zone into a setting that can often have a sterile essence.

In a study done by AARP, 90% of adults expressed their desire to continue to live at home while they age.

Many studies have also supported the benefits of aging in place, meaning remaining in the home as long as possible.

With that said, there are some rather nice assisted living homes and sometimes that is the best option for an elderly person. However, if it can be prevented, it is recommended. Home care companies help keep the elderly population comfortably living at home by offering assistance and liveliness.

Maintain Dignity

A study done by the Alzheimer’s Association found that 71% of adults fear that as they age they will become a burden to their loved ones. This fear actually outranks the concern associated with moving into a nursing home which resonates with 56% of study participants.

Because of this, geriatric individuals may be hesitant to reach out to loved ones when they are feeling lonely or in need of assistance. At home care offers an outlet that allows individuals to get the support they need while maintaining a strong sense of dignity. The feeling of being self-sufficient and independent is preserved when care is being offered in a form of assistance as opposed to micromanagement.

Lower Cost

Often, in-home care is less expensive than paying for an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Along with the increased expense, many facilities will provide semi-private rooms which take away a sense of privacy. The pricing can differ based on the level of care needed, therefore it is best to reach out to home care companies. Together you can discuss which options best suit your situation and create a care plan that is beneficial for everyone.

Personalization

With one on one at home services, an individual can get the care that is right for them. In order for group home settings to operate efficiently, seniors are often put on a schedule of activities that may go against a routine they are used to.

Care provided in the house also allows family to visit whenever is convenient for them. They are not restricted to visiting hours nor do they have to crowd in uncomfortable spaces in order to spend time together. Instead, precious family time can be spent in the comfort and luxury of home. This also encourages families to visit their elderly loved ones, an essential mental and emotional form of support, because there is not a fear that they are interrupting the routines of the nursing home or assisted living facility.

High Level of Care

With companion care, you will never have to worry about your family member getting neglected. One on one personalization combined with the comforts of home makes this a fantastic option to help ease one’s stressors later in life. Convenient for both the family and the senior, in-home care can help preserve everyone’s quality of life.
